VLC MES Helps a Business Successfully Enhance Manufacturing Efficiency

Customer:
Our client is a manufacturing-based company based in the Chicago area that has been in business since the 1960s and provides a diverse range of products and services to the railways, solar power, utilities, wireless sites, oil and gas, and other industrial and commercial ventures.

Challenge:
The customer was facing challenges with standard time and processing the production orders manually. Apart from this, maintaining Excel sheets to process the number of orders was a concern. The operators/supervisors had to manually check which production order was complete or in process. They wanted to process production orders based on actual times instead of standard times and process production orders as and when operations were completed. Besides, they wanted to consume raw materials upon completion of the routing step and have real-time visibility of the progress of production orders.

Further, they had a hard time processing multiple production order operations simultaneously, evaluating indirect activity, and user total/shift time. Additionally, their then-existing system could not provide them with the requisite analytics and notifications, caused unexpected downtime, and eventually had trouble drawing up robust plan maintenance.

Solution:
After the successful implementation of VLC MES (Manufacturing Execution System), the client can know the time when the operator begins or ends the Setup/Run time, even when there is any product that needs to be scrapped or reworked. This way, the production status is accurately visible. VLC MES Work Center Assignment let the client choose to whom and what orders were to be assigned. Also, the Task List displayed specified or assigned orders for quick processing. VLC MES also enabled the client to process production orders using barcodes without requiring manual clicks. VLC MES showcases production analytics thus offering access to strong data-based decision-making for the benefit of the whole organization.

Benefit:
With the implementation of VLC MES, the client could use the Batch Order Process to perform operations on multiple production orders simultaneously which reduced the setup times. They could now maintain indirect activities or time that is not directly related to the production orders and have complete visibility. This helped them in evaluating daily user activities. VLC MES helped track the operator’s full/shift time by monitoring the production order and activity time. VLC MES enabled the client to record work or machine center downtime or stop times. It also allowed the client to receive notifications about production order completion, delay, production order inventory shortage, quantity variance, time variance, maintenance, scrap quantity variance, and so on.

Based on the data, VLC MES exhibited work center performance, efficiency, work order vs. indirect activity, activity summary, resource performance, identifying bottlenecks, gaining insight to predict machine downtime, eliminating waste and so on which helped the client in making informed decisions for business strategy through a fully digital and automated operations tool.
